MATLALA – Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the cash-in-transit heist which occurred outside Polokwane on Monday morning.
According to police, on Monday, an unknown number of suspects ambushed a cash delivery truck on Matlala road just outside Polokwane and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police said a manhunt ensued immediately and seven suspects aged between 24 and 59 were rounded up since Monday and early Tuesday morning in different parts of the province.
According to police two stolen vehicles with false registration plates, ammunition, cartridges, money bags and explosives were recovered during the operation by members.
The arrest of the suspects followed swift action by a multidisciplinary team led by the Hawk’s Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit and supported by the Provincial Task Team, Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team.
The Provincial Police Commissioner Lt General Nneke Ledwaba visited the scene on Monday which occurred a few kilometers outside Polokwane.
Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said it was alleged that in the early hours of Monday morning at about 05:35 a group of armed suspects driving in a white Isuzu double cab and a blue Rav4, attacked a security vehicle transporting money and fired shots at its wheels until it became stationary.
Ngoepe said the culprits held the security officers at gunpoint and used unknown explosives to blast open the safe before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
“Two of the security officers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention,” concluded Ngoepe.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrates Court soon on a myriad of charges.
