Police urge motorists to honour road rules after four perish in accident outside Polokwane

MOGWADI – The South African Police Service at Mogwadi outside Polokwane are investigating a case of culpable homicide after four people perished when motor vehicles collided head-on on Saturday 05 May 2018 afternoon.

Police said it was alleged that two motor vehicles were travelling in opposite directions along Mogwadi and Polokwane road when one was trying to overtake another car until it collided head-on with the oncoming one.

Lt Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the two occupants from a Polo VW and two from a Mazda Etude died instantly following the collision.

“Five other occupants from both vehicles sustained serious injuries and they were immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment,” explained Ngoepe.

Police further said the process of identifying the deceased was still unfolding. The cause of the fatal crash was not clear at the stage but police investigations would tell as they were still continuing.

SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Nneke Ledwaba has raised a serious concern on the high rate of road fatalities that were still happening in a number of areas throughout the province.

Ledwaba said motorists ought to at all times respect the Road Traffic Act in all roads to prevent continuous loss of life.

“The South African Police Service in conjunction with the relevant traffic Law Enforcement Agencies in the province are going to deal mercilessly with drivers still behaving in contravention of the rules of the road,” concluded Ledwaba.
