COSATU says R20 hourly rate is better than R17 per hour

MAHWELERENG

The Congress of the South African Trade Union (COSATU) first deputy president Tyotyo James has called the National Union of Metal Workers South Africa (NUMSA) and the South African Federation of Trade Union (SAFTU) hypocrites for criticising COSATU after it accepted the R20 hourly rate minimum wage

Addressing the Limpopo May Day rally in Mahwelereng on Tuesday 1 May 2018, James called NUMSA hypocrites, saying the R20 hourly rate is better than the R17 per hour NUMSA signed for workers working as cashiers in cafes at filling stations

James has however acknowledged that the minimum wage is not a living wage, but it will benefit over 6 million including farm workers, domestic workers amongst others

He said NUMSA has the bravery to criticise COSATU for agreeing on the minimum wage

James said the COSATU will launch a campaign to support the African National Congress to win the 2019 national elections

Meanwhile ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe said they will continue to fight and ensure that no worker is employed as a temporary worker for over three months

Mantashe who was also at the Limpopo rally said workers who are temporary employed because of labour brokers, must declare a labour dispute with the employer

“I am looking forward to the day COSATU take the cases related to labour brokers to court” Said Mantashe

Mantashe further said workers also have a legal right to do work that is not dangerous and the legal right to join Unions representing workers in their workplaces

“No employer will victimise workers because they have joined Unions, the law is on the side of Unions” said Mantashe

Mantashe further says slammed SAFTU leader Zwelinzima Vavi saying he does not understand the R20 minimum wage and how over 6 million people including farmworkers, domestic workers amongst others will benefit from it

However, Mantashe agreed that when the time is right the minimum wage must be taken up to be a living wage

Furthermore, the South African Civic rights Organisation has used the May Day rally to reiterate its call to government to fight corruption because it delays service delivery

SANCO national deputy president Mathabo Leeto said as government continues to build houses to the poor, it must ensure the houses are built next to the workplaces so that workers will not use the minimum wage to travel to work as they will be left with nothing
