MOTETEMA – Hundreds of Sterkfontein Villagers were demonstrating outside Motetema Magistrate’s Court on recently.
The residents demanded the release of four community members who were arrested for mob justice.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday 11 March after assaulting two suspected criminals they were accusing of committing a string of crimes around the village
. A community member, Timothy Ntshwane said the community became angry after a number of house breaking committed in the village.
“A community meeting was held where it was agreed that the two suspects be hunted down. They were found at the nearby Tafelkop Village high in nyaope and were heavily beaten by the residents,” he said. He added that they were rescued after the police arrived and were taken to hospital
. “Three community members were arrested and charged with public violence. The fourth community member was also arrested later. Unfortunately one of the suspects died at hospital on Wednesday 21 March,” he said.
According to Timothy, the community was demanding the release of the suspect when they appear in court on Tuesday 27 March. “Residents demand the release of these community members because the police fail to arrest criminals who terrorize the community,” he said. The matter was postponed to Monday 9 April 2018 for police investigation and a formal bail application.
