The village of Ga-Phaahla, Sekabing at Makhuduthamaga will be filed in history books as the first to host TUPS Royal Cup tournament in honour of their traditional leader. The Kgoshi Phaahla TUPS Royal Cup was staged at Tigers Sports Ground on Saturday 03 February 2018. The top 4 tournament was played by newly formed TUPS teams from the villages under Kgoshi Phaahla’s throne, namely, Mamatjekele King TUPS Club, Masehleng TUPS Club, Regae TUPS Club and Itireleng TUPS Club. In his address to the opening ceremony of the Inaugural Kgoshi Phaahla TUPS Royal Cup, Kgoshi Letsiri Phaahla who is also the provincial chairperson of Contralesa indicated that he was scheduled to welcome the national leadership led by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa but chose to spend the day with young people as an expression of his commitment and full endorsement of the TUPS Royal Cup initiative.
“In the organisation organisation I am serving (Contralesa) we define ourselves as the key to rural development. That rural development should not only be seen in the light of better roads, water and sanitation and so forth, it is about developing people. I chose to be with you because the future is you” Kgoshi Phaahla said
He added that his office view TUPS Royal Cup as the most pragmatic, accessible and sustainable investment in young people and communities under the aegis of traditional leadership.
“It is an investment in the young people under the umbrella of traditional leadership. What we are starting today here in Ga-Phaahla has the potential to change your lives for better. I urge you to maintain discipline and passion for sport because except of its lifestyle qualities, sport is also a source of livelihood. I am seeing future champions of this new sport being sharpened today. As Contralesa Limpopo we will encourage fellow traditional leaders to support similar initiatives in their communities under their esteemed royal thrones. Hosting this Royal Cup here today feels like validation of the kingdom of my father, grandfather and great men before them” concluded Kgoshi Phaahla.
Among corporate partners that supported the Kgoshi Phaahla TUPS Royal Cup was Progress Milliong represented by Mr Obey Mabulwana and Mr Frans Soafo who also provided promotional entertainment that stirred excitement and jovial mood at the event.
The final match was played between Regae TUPS Club (Tsantsabela) from Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality and Masehlaneng TUPS Club from Makhuduthamaga. The final whistle declared Masehlaneng TUPS Club the inaugural champions of Kgoshi Phaahla TUPS Royal Cup owing to the 5-3 win.
