RAL promises to rebuilt roads in Tubatse

BURGERSFORT – It will cost an estimated R10 million to rehabilitate the D737 Road, which links Steelpoort and Lydenburg.
This was revealed during a meeting between the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL), Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) and local communities. The gathering was held at Lapeng Guest Lodge on Friday.
CEO of RAL, Maselaganye Matji, said they will look to rebuild the road at the start of their next financial year in April.
“Having heard from the communities, it’s clear that there are short-term solutions needed to improve the road. We will revert back to the residents within a fortnight to see what temporarily improvements can be done.”
Matji did not reveal the time frame on the completion of the road. “We have already started with the planning phase. We will start communicating with users when we commence with the hard work. But, this will be after our financial year.”
He told the crowd that there was a backlog in both upgrading and maintenance of roads in Limpopo. “We need additional funding to address some of the new projects. In order to address new projects, creative and innovation funding projects are required. This agency will strive in enhancing and strengthening strategic partnerships,” he added.
He pleaded with mines and business owners to assist in improving Limpopo’s roads.
Meanwhile residents said the D737 was a cause of many fatalities in the area. “We hope and believe this road gets improved.” Fanie Nel, a resident from Rietfontein, said it had become so bad that motorists avoided it and resorted to the R37, despite it being a longer route.
“Look at the deep holes next to Olifantspoortjie, they are deepening more and more. This road is worse than a gravel road.”
Matji indicated that in improving the road they will be supporting economic growth and development by reducing traffic congestion, cutting down on travel time and facilitating the movement of people, goods and services.
Among some of the roads RAL has earmarked to upgrade are the D4220 from Tjate to Phahlamohlaka and the D4180 from Ga-Mashabela to Atok. The agency also plans to use R81 million to improve the D2219 at the Steelbridge intersection.
