POLOKWANE-Polokwane Municipality has over three (3) years of giving sponsorships to the deserving learners who comes from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Executive mayor of Polokwane Thembi Nkadimeng said: “This is one of our fourth year to allocate bursaries. Our intentions is to make sure that we play an important role in education and developing our community. It’s not only the responsibility of the municipality only to pay first the bursaries but we looked through some funders that we make sure that they can contribute to developing the society” She said.
” It’s a full competitive process where we advertise around October, that learners fetch forms, fill them and gave them back with the help of their parents or guardians, we look specifically on orphans and families which are having unemployed parents, but excellence is a matter of importance. We take learners who are already admitted at particular schools but because of financial shortfall for them to achieve their academic goals” said Nkadimeng.
One of the fifty two (52) beneficiaries Isaaih Mothomogolo(17) studying Bachelor of arts in Optometry who is a first year student at University of Limpopo said the municipality has opened doors for them. ” I really want to thank the Polokwane Municipality for the nice gesture they have given us, this is really a huge opportunity for us to study because of our financial problems, as our families can’t afford to pay all the full courses.
He added that “With this great help we making a vow that we are going to study hard, and we promise to produce good results” said Isaaih.
Matlala Timothy Head of Business banking at Standard bank said: “We are very delight as the Standard bank and we appreciate the idea of this whole concepts to take our children out of their misery. It’s not every day that people really take this with such spirits of not only wanting to advance the municipality they lead through financial terms but wanting to go beyond as how to improve our own areas of livelihood through education because education is very important” he said.
He further said ” Education is very close to our hearts as the bank, we really believe this is a major that can we can adopt and improve the livelihood of the people and the economy of the country. Our beneficiaries should stay away from alcohol and temptations and put their main focus on the books” said Matlala.
