Education department allegedly fails to deliver books to 222 schools

SEKHUKHUNE – The Department of Education in Limpopo has allegedly failed once again to deliver textbooks.
According to the Democratic Alliance (DA) statement, more than 222 schools across the province haven’t been supplied with learning material in time for the new academic year.
The DA’s Jacque Smalle said the department is now blaming the schools for not placing their orders in time towards the end of the 2017 academic year.
“The department, through its circuit offices, should have exercised due diligence and oversight to ensure compliance by all schools,” said the party’s leader.
Smalle said it is clear that the Department of Education MEC, Ishmael Kgetjepe, lied and misled the Portfolio Committee on Education late last year, that a service provider had been appointed for the next three years to deliver textbooks.
He said the DA is deeply concerned about the continuous non-delivery of textbooks especially in each and every new academic year since 2012 and the impact it has on many schools and learners across the province.
“It’s apparent that these schools will be forced to use their norms and standards budget to purchase some of the textbooks. The failure to deliver textbooks on time proves a lack of planning that continues to hamper the learners’ chances of having a successful academic year, once again,” Smalle said.
The statement said Kgetjepe must be held accountable for misleading the portfolio committee and the non-delivery of textbooks to these schools.
Provincial Department of Education spokesperson Sam Makondo said those 222 school did not place orders for text books because their learners enrolment did not increase and they are still using previous text book.
