Young and old revive their heritage by playing indigenous games
BURGERSFORT – Locals got the opportunity to learn and play indigenous games this past weekend.
Lonia Phokane who hosted the event, said she realised that children nowadays were couch potatoes and rarely played outside. Phokane organised the indigenous games at Tswelopele Sports grounds last Sunday. Young and old alike got the opportunity to learn and play historical indigenous games. She said the games promotes social cohesion and preserves heritage.
“Participants also have fun the old school way. I am worried that the kids of today no longer go outside and play. The indigenous games are slowly dying. The internet has taken over the world. It’s time we introduce this sort of games back to the people,” she added.
Amongst the games rendered included dibeke, diketo, kgati, khoko and morabaraba. Phokane told Sekhukhune Times that although the attendance was not satisfactory, she was planning on organising the games again.
