Another Zama Zama crushed by a rockfall

DRIEKOP- Barely a month after an illegal miner was crushed by a rockfall in Mooihoek. Another Zama Zama was killed on January 10.This time the incident happened at Maandagshoek.

Diphasong Commence Lerutla  (44) was hit by a rockfall when he was illegally  mining in the village. According to Mecklenburg Police spokesman Sgt Kgalake Mampuru the police were informed of the incident and visited the scene.

“The EMS was also called and on arrival Lerutla was certified dead.“We call on all members of the community to halt this tendency of engaging in illegal mining as this has, in addition of them becoming in conflict with the laws governing the Mineral resources, a potential of claiming lives due to the hazards associated with unprotected digging of the ground,” Mampuru warned

Mampuru told Sekhukhune Times that the Driekop SAPS have opened an Inquest docket after the incident.

Since the activities of illegal mining started mushrooming along the R37 road between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort. Scores of people have already been arrested and huge trucks as well as mining machinery confiscated.
