Limpopo transport department concerned about pedestrian deaths

SEKHUKHUNE – The Department of Transport in Limpopo doubled its efforts with road-safety campaigns to reduce fatal crashes during the festive season, however, MEC Makoma Makhurupetje remains concerned about the high number of pedestrians killed thus far.
“The number of fatalities is still low compared to 2016’s statistics. The preliminary statistics at hand from December 1 to January 1, 2018 indicate that from 290 accidents in the province, we have 151 fatal crashes. This is compared with
206 in 2016.”
Fifty-four drivers and 53 passengers were killed on Limpopo roads. A total of
44 pedestrians and one motorcyclist were also reportedly killed.
“In the 58 roadblocks that the department conducted since the
beginning of December, more than
27 000 vehicles were stopped and checked. Traffic officers arrested more than 179 drivers with 96 of them being arrested for drinking and driving,” Makhurupetje added.
As of New Year’s Day, there were 40 accidents and 29 fatalities in the Sekhukhune district.
The department spokesman, Matome Moremi indicated that the final figures will only be available in mid-January.
