GROBLERSDAL – An uncovered manhole a few meters away from the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality offices on Van Riebeek Street in Groblersdal continues to pose danger to pedestrians, years after it was left unattended.
The paper has in its previous editions highlighted the issue but when it visited site last week, the hole remained uncovered compromising safety of shoppers on the sidewalk to and fro Pick n Pay shopping centre.
The paper spoke to some of the pedestrians who often use the sidewalk to hear how they felt about the uncovered manhole with no warning signs around it.Peter Chauke, a shopper, said the manhole put safety of pedestrians at high risk and was surprised it was left unattended for a long time.
“I became aware of it a long time ago. When I first passed here and saw it, I thought it would soon be fixed but it is still here even today. People can get seriously hurt here, especially in the evening because the lighting on this street was not enough,” said Chauke
Joyce Khumalo, another shopper, said it was unbelievable how an open manhole could be left unattended for many months because it was right next to the offices of the municipality. She said there were many other such manholes in town.
Attempts to get comment from Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality were not successful at the time of going to press.
